I'm not super deep into arcade style puzzle games, but this one seemed really novel to me. I can't think of anything that has gameplay like this. Getting better at this game doesn't feel intuitive, and generally I haven't loved the gameplay, but I've had fun. The vibes are pretty great.


Annalynn MD. Lite


This could be my favorite arcade style puzzle game due to the gameplay. It clicks to me as both fun at a baseline level, and as something I like improving at. The gameplay reminds me of Pac-Attack, which reminds me I should get back to that game sometime, I've been more interested in it after watching those AverageTreyVG videos (2nd link). I'll probably get the full Annalynn MD. after it releases, this game's awesome.
 
 

Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit

 
I remember when this released, it got people saying the original Sonic Triple Trouble was secretly "the true Sonic 4". I'm not a fan of those sorts of discussions, there's no particular prestige to the title Sonic 4 to me, and giving it to Sonic And Tails 2 (that's the japanese name of Triple Trouble) sticks out as particularly strange to me. I like Triple Trouble though, and this is a cool remake.
 
This game feels very much like Sonic 3 with its general gameplay design. In that sense I think this game's general mechanics and level design are extremely fun, but there's a focus on setpieces that I don't care a ton for. The setpieces didn't weigh the experience down much though, I just wasn't enthralled by them.
 
I only bothered playing through as Sonic & Tails so far. I like that you can swap between them on the fly, it's convenient, and it makes it feel more like they're teamed-up. I tried Fang a bit, but his moveset didn't seem that fun to me, and while I get that it's probably supposed to look silly, his rolling animation looks annoyingly awkward.

I ended up not bothering to finish the postgame in Prodigal before playing this, and that seems like a mistake. I was definitely a little lost on some of the character relationships, and especially so on the religious lore, although I think I've been able to wrap my head around the general plot. As with seemingly every Colorgrave game I've played, I enjoyed the individual characters moreso than the story. There's not that many characters in this game though, nor are the characters featured an exceptional amount. It was still a fun cast, I especially liked how Zeagul was played completely straight.
 
I thought Prodigal was pretty focused on dungeons, but this game takes it to the extreme and takes place entirely within a single castle. I wouldn't say the map is quite like 1 big dungeon, sections are disjointed through a sort of level select, but it the gameplay is very focused on dungeon exploration. Don't get me wrong though, the dungeon exploration is fun.
 
The puzzles disappointed me because they featured even less mechanics than Prodigal, and the mechanics that remained weren't really pushed any further in depth. Some of the mechanics that were added don't seem like they were accounted for in the puzzle design, there's a couple optional combative upgrades that completely break a ton of the puzzle and just general map design because they let you leap over gaps and certain obstacles. A select few puzzles made me really doubt whether or not these items were intended for puzzle use though because I just could not figure out how to solve them any other way.
 
It definitely doesn't help that you can clip into objects which feels really jank.

Even beyond those items, a lot of puzzles just didn't feel super tightly designed. Being able to press down buttons with Oran directly didn't tend to break puzzles completely, but it felt like I was usually circumventing a couple of steps when I used him instead of an additional block/barrel.
 
Keeping the pace of this game above Prodigal is running being a constantly available mechanic, rather than a temporary upgrade. There's also plenty of save/respawn points throughout dungeons so death doesn't tend to set you as physically far back.
