Can I call myself a Metroidvania fan if I've never played through a single Metroid nor Castlevania game?

Despite this game's extremely apparent issues, I had a pretty good time. I found the main gameplay of exploring and fighting enemies and stuff to be a lotta fun.

Before bitching about the game's main issues I should mention though that I played the Nintendo Switch version. I don't know if the Steam version is any better, but I figure it could be.

Anyways, this game's framerate was awful in some sections. During this boss fight in particular the framerate literally dropped to 0 frames per second.

While the framerate definitely had other bad moments, this was an outlier in how bad things usually got.

My biggest issue with the game though was how my first save file straight up just broke. There's an autosave early on in the game that activates when you enter the door that first leads you outside, and if you die with it active then your save just breaks. Whenever I try to load it, I just get a blank screen, and whenever I try to delete it then the game crashes. (I probably could've still deleted it through the Nintendo Switch operating system, but I decided to keep it as a silly little memento.) Because of this, I was pretty weary of all of the autosaves. Thankfully for me though, most of the autosaves are right next to regular saves. I will note though, I died one other time with an autosave active and it functioned just fine.

On the topic of glitches, there was this weird one glitch in which you just shoot upwards, although this didn't really negatively impact my experience at all. All it did was make platforming slightly more convenient sometimes.

When it comes to general design gripes, I wasn't a huge fan of the pseudo-limitted save system. Overall, it's not that bad to work around, I mainly just dislike how it functions in relation to consumable items.

I'm pretty sure I was permanently locked out of an area, and I think that area might've had some items I missed. I'm not totally sure though since I couldn't find guides for this game. Regardless, I got 99% completion, and I only missed 1 trinket and 2 health upgrades.

My last main complaint is that I thought that one boss fight in the underwater section was pretty unfair.

To end on a high note, I thought the combat system in this game was pretty good.

Here's one of the combo trials.
