Man, it's nice to finally play through Sonic 2, 3, and Knuckles again. I just grinded out the Story mode on this collection, and had a really good time.
You may notice that I didn't say it's good to play Sonic 1 or Sonic CD again. That's because I already play Sonic 1 constantly, and because I straight up just don't like Sonic CD that much.
While I used to like them a little, this time around I really didn't like Sonic CD's special stages. My main problem with them is that you're on a time limit, which really de-incentivizes you from trying to actually learn the UFOs' movement patterns.
When it comes to these remasters, the main one I had issues with was Sonic 1 because I'm a big Sonic 1 nut, and I just don't like when it's different. Most of the changes like aspect ratio and stuff originate from the mobile version though, so I'm not particularly disappointed.
I've heard the Sonic 3&K remaster was particularly buggy, but I only experienced 1 bug, and it was so minor that don't even remember what it was. I imagine a lot of bugs were probably just patched out by the time I got to this collection.
I'm kinda upset though that the original Genesis versions the games weren't included. I would be really upset, but I already have access to the Genesis versions. The "Classic" mode would be especially insulting if I didn't have access to the Genesis versions.
I'm also kinda upset that they removed debug mode from all the games.
I'm not too bummed out over some songs from Sonic 3 being removed, because I actually enjoy the beta tracks that were put in their place.
I find it weird that you have access to the Drop Dash in all of the games. Maybe l'm just crazy but, I felt like the Drop Dash was faster in some games compared to others.
One addition actually really liked was the Coins. While allowing you to retry special stages probably goes against some of the original games' design philosophies, I appreciate them nonetheless. I moreso appreciated them as a reward for collecting lots of points though. Getting all S Ranks in Mission Mode kinda throws that out the window though because you get way more coins than you would probably ever need.
Mission Mode itself is alright. The difficulty was pretty all over the place, but there's at least creative stuff in there. There's unfortunately not a ton of them.
Amy is a nice addition, although her moveset feels especially derivative of Sonic's.
Being able to finally play every Game Gear Sonic game (legally) makes me pretty happy, even though already have most of them on 3DS, and even though I'm not in even the mood to play any of them right now. I would've really appreciated it as a kid.
Last thing I wanna note, I hate the menus in this collection. They're too slow for my liking.
