I thought the game at it's core was pretty fun.
It caught me off guard how the physics are a tad different than the other classic Sonic games, although the I got used to them by the end.
I found it odd how some zones only have 1 act.
On my initial playthrough, I tried to play through as many Bonus Stages as possible, although in retrospect I probably shouldn't have bothered once they started looping, because they take A LOT of time. On my initial playthrough, most stages took about 15 minutes, and half of that was just from constantly playing Bonus Stages. With that said, at least the Bonus Stages were pretty good. I definitely think they have the best version of Sonic 1 Special Stage gameplay.
I might as well mention the Special Stages as well. They were pretty fun, in fact, Sonic Superstars might have my favorite Special Stage gameplay out of any Sonic game. The way they're built led to their level design being largely forgettable though. They were also just pretty easy.
I wasn't exactly blown away by the Emerald Powers, some of them are so situational that the game has to explicitly tell you when to use them. The Bullet ability is the only one in particular that I thought was almost always useful. The Slow ability ended up being my favorite though even though it's not as useful as Bullet. For balancing reasons, I guess I get why they wouldn't want all the abilities to be super useful.
Out of all the playable characters, my favorite to play as was Amy. I ended up playing through most of the game as Tails though because I wanted to thoroughly explore the stages.
I've only briefly tried the Battle Mode. I didn't find it engaging, although I wanna give it the benefit of the doubt and say it was probably designed to be played with more than 2 players. (Update: I tried the online and it was still underwhelming. It's probably more fun when playing with friends rather than randos though.)
Now, onto my problems with the game. On single player, I felt the camera to be uncomfortably zoomed in. I don't think it completely ruins the game or anything, but I did find myself having noticably more fun when the camera was zoomed out.
My other huge problem is the boss fights. Most of them just involve way too much waiting. While in a vacuum, most of them aren't that tedious, since there's so many of them they're a huge detriment to the game's pacing. For the last 2 boss fights specifically, one of them gets incredibly janky near the end which led to hours of frustration, and one of them was both incredibly confusing on a narative level, as well as just unclear on how to actually deal damage to it.
I was also planning to complain about the load times, but then I realized that the 40+ second load times I kept experiencing were actually due to my Switch overheating.
