Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair

This game seems pretty difficult (I played using save states), but not nearly as difficult as the first 2 Wonder Boy games.

They slowed down the constant health drain by a pretty drastic amount, which I very much appreciated. From what I could tell also, the constant health drain just isn't there during the shoot em up sections.

I thought it was kinda cool how frequently you switch between different powerups/weapons. You pick up different weapons once every couple of seconds, which I think plays well into the game's very frantic nature.

The shooting in general felt off to me, but it's kinda hard to explain. It was kinda tough to tell the specifics of how some weapons worked partially because there's a lot of sprite flickering, and partially because you swap between weapons so often, so maybe that had something to do with it. It was still fun though.

Getting hit is also kinda odd. Getting shot drains some hp, while touching enemies just insta-kills you. And then there's some attacks that just trip you. You also don't get any hitstop or invulnerability when getting hit (unless you die), so your health bar can get drained pretty quickly.

Lastly, I wanna note how I thought it was pretty strange how this game was released on the Genesis, while the next game in the series, Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, was released on the Master System.
